Dr. Tina C. Gresham

NASHVILLE, TN — The Links, Incorporated’s Hendersonville Area (TN) Chapter continues to educate women through its service initiative, “Linking Together for Wellness,” a series of webinars designed to address women’s health issues. On Thursday, Feb. 15, 6:30 p.m., the chapter will present Dr. Tina C. Gresham, a cardiologist based out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who will share information to help you care for your heart health and build a healthier lifestyle. The webinar is free and open to the public.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, killing nearly 50,000 Black women annually. Nearly 59 percent of Black women, ages 20 and older, have cardiovascular disease, 58 percent have high blood pressure and only 20 percent of Black women have their blood pressure under control. In addition to high blood pressure, many other factors contribute to heart disease and stroke among Black women, including high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, lack of physical activity, being overweight and family history of heart disease.

“It is important that we take control of our health – and that means as women we need to listen to our hearts,” said Attorney Leah Love, president of the Hendersonville Area (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. “We juggle so much, but we must make health a priority and take steps to better educate ourselves on how to do so the right way.”

“February is a time to celebrate our culture and heritage, and even our loves as many observe Valentine’s Day, but it’s also the time that we build awareness around taking care of our hearts more intently,” said Veronica T. Mallett, M.D., chair of the Hendersonville Area (TN) chapter’s Health and Human Services Facet, and chief administrative officer for the More in Common Alliance, a partnership between Morehouse School of Medicine and CommonSpirit Health.
