Nashville, TN (TN Tribune)–Lack of access to capital is a major challenge for new businesses owned by Black women in Nashville. That’s why Nashville nonprofit Corner to Corner created a pilot initiative – “Academy Invested” – that is providing $1,000 loans to 17 such businesses.

On October 21, checks will be presented to three of those businesses, as Corner to Corner seeks to raise additional funds to build upon the pilot. The presentation will take place outdoors (weather permitting) or indoors (with masks and social distancing required).

The recipients of the loans (at a 1% interest rate) are Black women in Nashville who have started businesses, made compelling cases for the loans, and graduated from Corner to Corner’s entrepreneurship training program called The Academy. Since its founding in 2016, The Academy has graduated 434 entrepreneurs, 88% of whom are Black women, most of whom live in North or East Nashville.

The checks will be presented by Shana Berkeley, Director of The Academy. The presentation is an inspiring and emotional occasion, as the checks represent both crucial funding and vital affirmation.

The event is Thursday, October 21 from noon to 12:45 p.m. at Corner to Corner

604 Gallatin Avenue, Suite 214 Nashville.
