NASHVILLE, TN — Both a trailer and photos have been released online this week in advance of the upcoming Netflix biopic on the life and career of pioneering legislator Shirley  Chisholm.

The film titled “Shirley” was written and directed by John Ridley, and stars award-winning actress and director Regina King in the title role. The film is co-produced by both King and her sister Regina King, along with Ridley, Anikah McLaren, and Elizabeth Haggard. Ridley, Jeff Skoll and Ted Gidlow are executive producers.

The film spotlights Chisholm’s landmark 1972 presidential campaign. But it will also cover her historic political rise. Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968. She served seven terms from 1969 to 1983 representing New York’s  12th congressional district.  Her 1972 campaign made her both the first Black candidate for a major party presidential nomination, and the first woman to seek the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Chisholm took bold and often unpopular stances on many fronts, and was particularly outspoken on Civil Rights and Women’s Rights issues.

Others in the large cast include Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amira Vann, W. Earl Brown, Brad James, Regina King, Andre Holland and Terrence Howard.

“Shirley” debuts on Netflix March 22. The trailer and film photos are available online at blavity.com.
