SMYRNA, Tenn. — Wellpoint Tennessee, in partnership with Smyrna High School and Archie’s Promise, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday, October 2nd to celebrate the installation of a new hygiene vending machine at Smyrna High School.
The vending machine offers items such as deodorant, toothpaste, floss, wet wipes, and both feminine and regular hygiene packs. This initiative supports students’ health, dignity, and confidence, enabling them to focus on their education and personal growth without barriers related to hygiene insecurity.
“Access to essential hygiene items plays a critical role in a child’s confidence, classroom engagement, and overall well-being,” said Natalie Cooper, president of Wellpoint Tennessee. “Through partnerships with local schools, we’re tackling an overlooked factor that influences school attendance, self-esteem, and long-term health outcomes.”
The ribbon-cutting event took place at Smyrna High School, where the new vending machine will remain free to the community as a collaborative effort to tackle hygiene insecurity.
“By bringing this hygiene vending machine to our school, Wellpoint is helping students stay focused on their education while feeling clean and confident,” said Dr. Sherri Southerland, principal of Smyrna High School. “That level of support sends a powerful message about their dedication to student success and the overall well-being of our school community.”
Wellpoint Tennessee’s donation of this vending machine is part of a broader commitment to advancing community well-being by removing social and economic barriers to care. Smyrna High School serves as a vital support system for the students, and this initiative helps to provide free, convenient access to hygiene essentials, removing barriers that can affect their health and academic success.
Community organizations such as Archie’s Promise have played a key role in making this project possible, highlighting the power of community collaboration in addressing critical needs for vulnerable youth. This marks the 17th vending machine installed in Rutherford County, further expanding access and impact in the community.
