By Roz Edward Former President Donald Trump has called on his longtime friend, retired NFL star Herschel Walker to run against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) in Georgia. While Walker has made no public announcement about pursuing politics, Trump said it would be “fantastic” if Walker ran for the United States Senate in Georgia. “He would be unstoppable, just like he was when he played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and in the NFL,” Trump said in a statement, per The Hill. “He is also a GREAT person. Run, Herschel, run!” Walker, who was an NFL running back for 14 years, often…

By Norma Adams-Wade  Founding Member of the  National Association of Black Journalist  Texas Metro News Columnist Sports and politics make strange bedfellows. I’ve been drawn into the debate over moving the July 13, 2021 MLB All-Star Game from Atlanta to Denver because of Atlanta Republican Governor Brian Kemp hastily signing into law the controversial Senate Bill 202 on March 25. Democratic opponents widely view the new law as designed to suppress the increasing powerful Black vote that recently gave Georgia two additional Democratic Senators. Sports figures are largely involved in the debate. One intriguing part of the argument is that…

(Reuters) -U.S. federal health agencies on Tuesday recommended pausing the use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine after six women under 50 given the shot developed rare blood clots, dealing a fresh setback to efforts to tackle the pandemic. Following the news, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) said it was delaying the rollout of the vaccine to Europe, a week after regulators there said they were reviewing rare blood clots in four recipients of the shot in the United States. The moves come after European regulators said earlier this month they had found a possible link between AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and…

Nashville, TN (TN Tribune)—Families who lost loved ones to Covid-19 can now get help with funeral expenses from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, though the program got off to a bumpy start. The agency launched on Monday a hotline — 844-684-6333 — to apply for up to $9,000 in assistance per burial. While FEMA has aided families with disaster-related burial costs in the past, the Covid-19 effort is the largest of its type. Some $2 billion was allocated as part of the $900 billion relief deal Congress approved in December, while the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion package last month bolstered it…

Living in a rural area doesn’t mean you will be less likely to suffer from mental health problems. It does mean you will be less likely to have easy access to diagnosis and care. Even though rural residents are in poorer health generally than those living elsewhere, they have less access to treatment, partly because so many rural hospitals and health clinics have closed in recent years. For men, who are more reluctant to seek help for mental health problems and, according to Men’s Health Network, almost four times more likely to commit suicide than women, that scarcity of trained…

Jill Biden is bringing a new focus to the cause of supporting America’s military families. The first lady on Wednesday announced the next chapter for a decade-old military family support program she and then-first lady Michelle Obama led during the Obama administration. Biden said that military families are as important to the nation as a rudder is to a ship and that national security will be served by supporting their physical, social and emotional health. “How can we hope to keep our military strong if we don’t give our families, survivors and caregivers what they need to thrive? If we…

By Terry Allen She never spoke badly of anyone at all; she always would take the high road no matter what was being said about others during her inner circle talk. Yes, my Grandmother, Lucille “Big Mama” Allen, during her lifetime instilled so many lessons in all of us. This one was hard one for me to execute and she knew it. She repeatedly said find the good in all people and that would be enough! Over my lifetime I finally knew what she meant. I stopped to observe her words in the conversation she had with her church sisters.…
