Jewish electrician Yigal Yehoshua died of head injuries after he was hit in the head with a brick as he walked home from a Torah dedication ceremony on May 17. The incident happened during riots in the mixed Jewish and Arab city of Lod, Israel, but it led to a multicultural medical miracle as Yehoshua’s organs saved the lives of four people. Two Muslim surgeons at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem transplanted one of Yehoshua’s kidneys into a Christian Arab mother of six. “Yigal will go straight to heaven, to a better place,” Randa Aweis said after her…

An apparently confused wolf was captured on surveillance camera wandering outside a water and electricity supply company in Cologne, Germany. The wolf appeared on the CCTV system of RheinEnergie AG as it roamed the property shortly after midnight on May 19. RheinEnergie AG said in a press release that the wolf likely came from the greenway in the north of the city. Nature (LANUV) officials and the Wolf Documentation and Advice Center confirmed the animal was a wolf, not a dog. “This is extremely rare, but it happens,” an official from LANUV said. “The wolf, it just walks, and then…
Amphorae dating back some 5,000 years were recently recovered by dive units of the Italian police. The ancient containers were found in a seabed off the beach of Bue Marino along the northwest coast of Sicily. The three Italian clay amphorae from the 4th century B.C. and a Punic amphora from the 3rd century B.C. are believed to have come from an ancient shipwreck. Archaeologists say the area was an important commercial sea route connecting a number of Mediterranean cities. Video of Palermo’s Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) mission shows the partly intact amphorae buried halfway…
Sloths at a popular zoo in Wales are aging in place thanks to a brand new “retirement home.” Folly Farm residents Tuppee, 26, and Lightcap, 36, recently moved into a purpose-built home for older sloths that was built during the COVID-19 lockdown. Sloth Forest features biomass heating, soft flooring and extra places to snooze, according to the zoo’s website. “Like us humans, sloths are prone to aching muscles and creaking joints as they get older,” the zoo’s sloth keeper, Becky Dyson, posted on the website. “Our new sloth retirement home has lots of warmth, cozy places to cuddle up and…
MELBOURNE, Australia — Victorian train and tram passengers refusing to wear a mask during their morning commute to work or school may be slapped with an AU$200 ($154) fine. Since Melbourne emerged from its second Covid-19 lockdown in November, mask compliance on metropolitan trains and trams has fallen from 88 percent to just over 50 percent. The slide in the number of people following health directions has prompted the Victorian government to initiate a mask blitz from May 24. Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll claims passengers who decline authorities’ offer of a mask will be fined as part of the two-week…
CANBERRA, Australia — Michael Goodwin remembers as if it was yesterday. One of his history students, Nicole Sauer, in 2006, stood at the World War I grave of an ‘unknown soldier,’ one of the millions scattered across hundreds of commonwealth cemeteries on Western Front battlegrounds in Europe. “You could see her head drop, and she started crying straight away,” he recalls. After months of painstaking research through war records, the then 17-year-old from Mackay in north Queensland had managed to track down the final resting place of her great-great-uncle. “It was just gold. You can’t put that into words,” Goodwin says. Attorney-General George…
An Israeli-Arab nurse who saved the life of an Israeli Jew who was being beaten by an Arab mob, met the man in an emotional reunion at the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya last week. Fadi Kasem, a nurse in the Internal Medicine department, saved the life of Mor Janashvili on May 12, when rioting broke out in Acre, Israel. The two reunited a week later on the surgical ward of the medical center in Haifa where Janashvili, who still has light injuries, is a patient. They hugged and spoke about their experiences. “You saved my life. I do not…
BRISBANE, Australia — People entering Australia could provide coronavirus vaccination status through a new pre-check-in digital declaration when international borders reopen. Home Affairs boss Michael Pezzullo expects the federal government’s digital passenger declaration to be trialed early next year. “The digital passenger declaration will have the capability to validate the vaccination status of people who have been vaccinated in Australia when they return from overseas,” he said. “At the appropriate time, subject to public health advice, this could support Australians’ ability to travel without the need for 14 days quarantine on return.” The new system could also recognize international vaccination certificates, both…
CANBERRA, Australia — A new report by the Australian Institute has questioned the government’s figures on emissions reduction, claiming greenhouse gas levels are going up not down. The Morrison government insists it has reduced 2005 level emissions by 19 percent, putting it on track for its 2030 goal. That target is for a reduction of 26 to 28 percent on 2005 levels by 2030. But left-leaning think-tank The Australia Institute says the government is incorrect. It has analyzed government figures and taken out areas where it says reductions have not been caused by climate policy. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he…
