Researchers have determined an endangered vulture in Spain was poisoned by a veterinary medicine banned in other parts of the world. The cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), sometimes called a black vulture, was found dead in its nest last September at the Boumort Wildland, an ecotourism nature reserve in the Catalan Pyrenees region of northeastern Spain. The fledgling had learned to fly just 10 days earlier, authorities said. It also ingested diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory drug banned for veterinary use in many countries, due to its devastating effect on carrion bird populations, particularly vultures. Diclofenac causes severe kidney failure in vultures, but…

Lovers of all things chocolate spread, this one is for you. Israeli food-tech startup DouxMatok recently launched a line of cocoa spreads in the United States based on its proprietary technology that cuts sugar content by 50 percent, making Sunday morning pancakes a far less sugary and guilt-ridden event. DouxMatok, which was founded in 2014, has developed a product called Incredo Sugar — 99.9 percent real cane sugar with a tiny grain of silica added to each crystal. This combination boosts the sweet sensation on taste buds, enabling manufacturers to cut down on sugar without compromising on taste or texture,…
Video shows a giant panda cub climbing over her mother’s body during playtime. The cub, named Kaedehama (Fuihin ), was born in November in Adventure World, a theme park in the Japanese prefecture of Wakayama. In the latest video the park has posted, Kaedehama enjoys quality time with her mother, Ryohama. The baby panda has been associating mom time with playtime and loves to climb on her mom’s large body. Soon, the playing turns into play-wrestling as Ryohama tackles the cub and gently bites it. After a while, the pair tire and lie next to each other for a quick…
A farmer who owns a celebrity rooster has had to cancel a world tour after Turkey went into lockdown. The rooster is popular for its routine of crowing so long that it runs out of breath and faints. Okan Gokbudak, the owner of the Bahtiyar, determined rooster seen in viral video, said the most exciting part of the trip was the invitation to join Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on Heart Breakfast, a commercial radio show in the U.K. “The producers of the show contacted me at the end of April,” Gokbudak said. “They talked about my rooster Bahtiyar on…
Spanish researchers have created an image of how the world would have looked during the glacial period in eastern Spain. It includes a thick forest and an abundance of fruits and berries, thanks to a favorable microclimate. The artist’s impression, which contrasts with the frozen image of the glacial period usually portrayed, is based on data gathered during work on recreating the surroundings of Bolomor Cave in Valldigna Valley in Valencia between 100,000 and 350,000 years ago. The research conducted by a team from the University of Murcia, led by professor Jose Carrion, was recently published in the journal Quaternary…

Many of the experiments will not…
Computing giant Intel Corp plans to back its Israeli operations with an additional $600 million, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said at the beginning of May. Gelsinger made the announcement during a one-day visit to Israel as part of a tour of Intel’s European operations, which included visits to Germany and Belgium. During the visit, Gelsinger met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he sees a “vibrant future” for Intel and Israel for decades to come. SYDNEY — Australia’s economic recovery has exceeded all expectations, and that will be reflected in the Reserve Bank’s latest policy statement, central bank deputy governor Guy Debelle says. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will, on May 7, release its quarterly statement on monetary policy containing its latest economic forecasts. As per the officials, strong global growth is expected this year and next as the global economy recovers from the pandemic. Vaccine supply is increasing, which is allowing some economies to ease restrictions and open up. Substantial policy stimulus is also supporting the recovery. But the recovery is expected to remain uneven. “The recovery in the Australian…
SYDNEY — Trade Minister Dan Tehan has expressed disappointment over the downward spiral in diplomatic relations with China. Beijing has indefinitely suspended all contacts under the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue. It is the latest move in a long-running feud and will make already strained diplomatic relations even harder to repair. “We want to have a dialogue with China, we want to be able to work through our differences,” Tehan said on May 7. “We have a very important economic relationship, which has helped both counties. It has lifted millions out of poverty in China, it helps our standard of living here…
