All Veterans Honored on November 11 in U.S.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month in 1918. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors living military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation. A national ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia

November 11, a day we honored all veterans of the U.S. armed forces and those killed in battle.

The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce joined the nation in recognizing and honoring America’s veterans for their patriotism, willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

As we celebrated the historical significance of Veterans’ Day it is important to remember that from the 21.8 million veterans who have served our nation (484,901 live in Tennessee), 2.2+ million are black, 1.2 million veterans are Hispanic, (6.5% of all veterans in 2016 were Hispanic) 265,000 are Asian, 153,000 are Native American, 30,000 are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 17.5 million are non-Hispanic white and 1.6 million are female (Source: U.S Census).

It is a great privilege for us to salute those brave men and women who answered the call to duty. Their extraordinary courage and dedication, through history and around the world, honor our nation and its people. It is now our responsibility to honor these individuals, many of them family members and neighbors, to ensure that their service and sacrifice is not forgotten.

To all our service men and women, we are thankful for your service. And to all our Veterans, the legacy of your service lives on. Today, we live in a better world thanks to your courage and sacrifice.
