Voting is necessary to maintain our democracy

There has probably never been a more urgent time in our history as a nation to exercise one’s constitutional right to vote.

The stakes are too high not to vote when you look at what direction this country may be encountering. We have a choice in maintaining a democracy or face what many fear as fascism. Fascism is an extreme right totalitarian form of government where one ruler or single party holds most of the country’s power. The country is ruled by a dictator with absolute control over the lives of the people. This is literally a nightmare when you have been blessed with a democratic form of government granting the people some control over their lives. You can throw the term “A government of the people, by the people and for the people,” out the window.

Surely, regardless of our varying political views, we can set aside our personal differences and vote for what is in the best interest of this country, hoping we don’t learn and regret how good we had it. No, our country is far from being perfect, but as it stands now, we can appreciate and take pride that we have some say in the policies and laws that govern our lives. Refusing to vote negates your power or say in how you are governed. In other words, you cannot afford not to vote if you value the direction this country is headed.

There are those who equate this country to a half-filled glass of water, some being optimistic and seeing the glass as half full while others are pessimistic, seeing the glass as half empty. Whether we like it or not, that is one of the strong points we share in having opposing views reflecting the feelings and perspectives of all the people, hopefully with the propensity to bring about compromises we all can live with. While that is not always possible, it is a blessing to have the option.

The results of this presidential election will highlight the direction this highly divided country has chosen to follow. I pray that God be with our nation as we make this paramount move determining the direction of our country. God’s embrace and blessings still mean something to some people. There have been a lot of conjectures, hyperboles, lies, and misinformation formulated to divide the public and present false narratives. I can only tell you to go by what you honestly believe when voting, especially what you have personally heard and seen. Trust your insight.

We have two unique contrasting individuals running for president with different visions for this country. One who is optimistic, highlighting unity, hope, and dwelling on what we share in common as citizens, and the other one, pessimistic, painting a picture of doom and gloom and spreading fear, hate, and disunity. No one can tell someone how to vote, but based on the facts, not lies and misinformation, the American voters should be able to honestly pick a president we can be proud of and one that warrants our trust and respect.

This election is important because it will divulge whether we have fully lost our moral compass or if morality still means something to us as a nation. At this point, the majority of voters are adamant about their choice for president, and no amount of debating will change their minds. We must also be mindful of those we elect to local, city, and state offices. A president is only as effective as the support they have, much of that support lies in legislative bodies, governors, and judicial appointees.

Like it or not, your choice is a reflection of you and can be seen favorably or unfavorably. Choosing along party lines for unsavory candidates for political offices does not serve our country well. Let’s put country first and vote. Therefore, let’s pray for God’s favor and blessing. Once again, vote and make your voice heard. Your vote can make a difference.
