Metro Has Tough Opening Week
Opening day for High School football has come and gone. Most metro teams struggled. Only five of the 13 teams came away with victories. The Pearl-Cohn Firebirds defeated Republic High School 63-0 to remain at the top this week’s Metro Baker’s Dozen poll. They will have a much stiffer challenge with they travel down West End to take on Montgomery Bell Academy. The other four metro teams that were on the winning side were Cane Ridge, Overton, Antioch and McGavock which defeated Maplewood 25-24 in the only metro match-up of Week 1.
The Hillsboro Burros and the Stratford Spartans will battle in this week’s WMG Sports Metro Game of the Week. Burro head coach Maurice Fitzgerald is in his first year after leading the Spartans to an undefeated regular season in 2016. Both teams will be looking to play much better after taking blowout losses in Week 1.
Maplewood will take on a metro team at home for the second consecutive week when they take on East Nashville. Former Maplewood star Anthony Owens is in his first year as offensive coordinator at East. He will look to defeating his former school and get his team their first victory this season. Maplewood junior quarterback BoBo Hodges was sharp in the loss to McGavock. East is led by sophomore quarterback Aronde Thompson.
