By Natalie R. Bell NASHVILLE, TN — One of the most historically significant Black funeral home buildings in Nashville has stood for approximately 100 years at 1306 South Street, in the Edgehill neighborhood. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes African American funeral homes as expressions of entrepreneurial spirit and cultural responsibility. During the era of legal racial segregation in the South, and for many years thereafter, Black funeral directors ran 24-hour operations caring for the living, as well as the sick and bereaved. Often their businesses were Black-owned, family-run enterprises, providing taxi, ambulance, as well as funeral services for…
By Vanessa Romo WASHINGTON, DC — Civil rights giant and former U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who spent decades fighting for racial justice, will be honored with a postage stamp next year. In a recent announcement, the U.S. Postal Service said the stamp “celebrates the life and legacy” of the leader from Georgia, who risked his life protesting against segregation and other injustices in the violent Jim Crow-era South. “Lewis spent more than 30 years in Congress steadfastly defending and building on key civil rights gains that he had helped achieve in the 1960s. Even in the face of hatred and…
By John Banks NASHVILLE, TN — On the foggy morning of Dec. 15, 1864, 18-year-old Private Peter Bailey of the 17th U.S. Colored Troops marched with two other Black regiments and a small white brigade southeast on Murfreesboro Pike from Nashville. For the U.S.C.T., the day’s diversionary attack against the right flank of the Confederates’ Army of Tennessee would be their first major battle of the war. Many of their white comrades doubted the U.S.C.T’s worth as soldiers. Ultimately, the U.S. Army’s attack was unsuccessful, but the Black troops fought bravely, proving their mettle to the white soldiers. One hundred…
WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released data showing that 5,190 workers died in 2021 as a result of job-related incidents. The bureau’s findings indicate that workers of color in the United States continue to die on the job at higher rates than all workers. In 2021, the Black worker job fatality rate was the highest since 2007, at 4.0 per 100,000 workers. The Latino worker job fatality rate (4.5 per 100,000 workers) also remains significantly above the national average of 3.6 per 100,000 workers. These statistics do not include workers who died from illnesses such as…
By Emily Midkiff While visiting an elementary school library in 2016 to count the fantasy books for a graduate class on fantasy literature, I noticed there were hardly any science fiction books for readers under 12. This discovery prompted me to spend the next five years researching the shortage of science fiction books for children in this age group. I reached two big conclusions. First, I found that adults often think that kids can’t understand science fiction—but they can. Second, I found that authors and illustrators are not depicting characters from diverse backgrounds in children’s stories about the future. As…

NASHVILLE, TN — Most doctors are comfortable practicing within the four walls of their clinic. Optometrist Feyi Aworunse isn’t like most doctors. When hundreds of patients needed her and her fellow optometrists’ care in Costa Rica, they didn’t let the lack of a physical clinic stop them. They rolled out their charts, stuck them on some nearby trees and got to work. “When I say I can practice anywhere,” Dr. Aworunse says, “I mean I can practice anywhere.” Thankfully, anywhere turned out to be Nashville General. Though her days aren’t as dramatic as back when she worked abroad, she still…
