NEW ORLEANS, LA — Mason was a seventh grader. His dad, Dr. Calvin Mackie, was an icon in STEM education. A former mechanical engineering professor at Tulane University, Dr. Mackie had started STEM NOLA, a popular initiative that brought STEM (science, technology, education and math) education into the heart of urban communities. As long as he could remember, Mason was an active participant in those events, building rockets, making science kits, applying the laws of physics to everyday life. But suddenly, it wasn’t fun for him anymore. “When STEM NOLA first started, I was going to all the events. It…

April is alcohol awareness month which means many organizations across the nation increase their already significant efforts to educate the public and raise cognizance about alcoholism, its causes, effects, and proper treatment. Studies have shown that large groups of people believe their drinking is solely social. Research shows, that in many cases social drinking is used as a crutch. Wade decision that banned states from outlawing abortion. Gov. Jared Polis signed into law the Reproductive Health Equity Act, which passed the Democratic-led Legislature after dozens of hours of testimony by residents and fierce opposition by minority Republicans. The law guarantees access to reproductive care before and after pregnancy and bans…
NASHVILLE, TN – These are dark days for the 4th Estate. People don’t want to pay for news because you can Google anything for free. Reporters get blamed for the spread of false information, too, and the public considers them untrustworthy. And then there are the usual occupational hazards–not for lying to people–but for telling the truth. Democracies cannot survive without a vigilant and independent press and powerful people operating in the shadows don’t want their secrets coming to light. “We’re seeing a record number of journalists being imprisoned and killed around the world,” said Carlos Martinez de la Serna,…
By Aaronetta PierceThank you for being such a great teacher, inspiration and friend to me for almost four decades. I reflect often on your many lessons, especially your powerful quote, “Only equals can be friends”. You explained that friends need not be equally famous, or smart, or wealthy, or talented; but they do need to bring an “equal” commitment to the friendship. I was reminded of this thought when it was announced in 2006 that Oprah Winfrey was hosting a magnificent luncheon and gala for a few of the greatest Living African American Women “Legends” of our time. Of course…
