By Pat Bryant A modern-day lynching is what Civil Rights and Freedom Movement leaders are calling the death of Ahmaud Arbery and the trial of three White men accused of his murder. Black pastors, churches, and communities across the United States have been summoned to Brunswick, GA. by Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Jamal Bryant, and Benjamin Crump after statements in court made by Attorney Kevin Gough. Gough, a defense lawyer for one of three White men accused of killing the Black jogger, asked the Georgia judge to limit the number of high-profile Black pastors allowed to attend the proceedings. A Black police officer has filed a discrimination charge against an Ohio police department whose chief was seen in a surveillance video putting a note saying “Ku Klux Klan” on the officer’s jacket. Attorneys for the officer said Thursday they discovered after the video was released this summer that the chief, who soon retired, had previously posted pictures of the officer and other employees on the Sheffield Lake Police Department’s bulletin board that mocked their race, gender and religion. The discrimination charge filed with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission is the first step toward filing a civil rights lawsuit, the…
SALT LAKE CITY — The family of a 10-year-old girl who died by suicide has accused a Utah school district that was recently reprimanded by the U.S. Department of Justice for failing to address widespread racial discrimination of not doing enough to protect their daughter who they said was bullied for being Black and autistic. Salt Lake City police confirmed this week they are investigating the weekend death of Isabella “Izzy” Tichenor as a suicide. Her death has generated widespread outrage, including Wednesday from Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell, who called the case “sickening.” Tyler Ayres, an attorney representing Izzy’s…
BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Jurors in the trial of three white men charged in Ahmaud Arbery’s killing watched security camera videos Thursday that show other people entering a home under construction in the months before the 25-year-old Black man was chased and gunned down after running from the site. They saw two white boys with bicycles walk into the doorless garage to drag away plywood. Jurors also watched a clip of a white man and woman strolling into the home at night, the man carrying a small bag in one hand. And they saw Arbery himself wandering between the home’s exposed…

NASHVILLE – Nashville’s city-wide tree planting campaign, Root Nashville, celebrated a significant milestone in late October: the planting of the 20,000th tree since launching three years ago in October of 2018. The milestone tree was part of a canopy restoration project in the Lincoya Hills neighborhood in Donelson, a neighborhood that sustained severe canopy loss from the March 2020 tornado. The planting event was made possible by Ascend Federal Credit Union, who generously funded the planting of 70 trees as part of their own milestone 70th anniversary. The grassroots planting campaign, led by the Cumberland River Compact and Metro Nashville…
