Dear Editors, Five years ago today, a gunman entered the Pulse LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and committed one of the most devastating acts of hate our nation has seen. Forty-nine people were killed and 53 others wounded in the attack on LGBTQ and Latin American communities. Today, we remember those we lost. We grieve for their families and friends. And, we honor them by keeping up the fight against anti-LGBTQ hate. The Pulse murders occurred during Pride Month in a space where LGBTQ people can freely be their whole selves. Since then, an explosion of hateful, anti-trans legislation has…

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Tennessee lawmakers are calling for more scrutiny of a Chattanooga shelter for immigrant children after state officials confirmed that an unaccompanied migrant child reported being abused there. The abuse allegations became public earlier this week during a legislative committee, where lawmakers quizzed top leaders at the Department of Children’s Services during a conversation on migrant children being brought to Tennessee by the federal government. The practice has taken place for years, but has sparked recent outrage from Republican leaders who allege the federal government has not been transparent when pressed about immigrant children moving through Tennessee.…
Nashville, TN (TN Tribune)–Some of you may know me from the over 40 years I worked in the Nashville Parks Department, but for those who don’t, I’m Henderson Kelly — Odessa’s dad. My wife and I have always been proud of Odessa’s accomplishments. Even before she made a name for herself in Nashville fighting for the working people in our community, Odessa was already taking on big challenges. I can’t help but smile thinking about the time she tried out for the boys football team when there was no team for girls — not only did she make the team, but she…
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ A development that organizers say “is poised to become the second-largest Black-owned film studio in the United States” moved one step closer to fruition June 10 when the Land Use Control Board approved the zoning adjustments necessary to build “BLP Film Studios,” an 85-acre production facility in Whitehaven. “Our goal is to make Memphis the international epicenter for producing films and projects led by Black and brown creators on the production and directing side of those projects,” said Jason A. Farmer, 52, a former Marine and business executive who for the past few several years has…
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the name of the Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership. Keisha Gardner Beard loves waving at passersby, just like her grandfather Kossie Gardner Sr. used to. Back in the day, she said, the North Nashville community adored him. Starting out broke and unemployed, Gardner built his decades-long career on Jefferson Street as one of the city’s best-known Black funeral directors. Long before desegregation, he helped established some of the city’s first Black neighborhoods, Gold Coast and Haynes Heights. “He wasn’t about the money,” Gardner Beard said. “He was about the service.” Gardner Beard wants…
