NASHVILLE – Today Rep. Jim Cooper (TN-05) was appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Life is something to cherish and not take for granted. As Publisher, I had the pleasure of seeing Marshall grow-up in journalism. As recently, as last week, we were on a video conference together for Facebook where The Tribune and The Atlanta Voice were chosen. There he was, talking away, making all of us laugh as we buckled down to the business of learning, together. He was a joy and he was tough. His keen journalistic sense always allowed him to create stories and coverage that elevated us. His recent coverage, of which he was very proud, regarding Stacy Abrams…
By Krista Nelson and Barbara Jensen Ruth is a 67-year-old woman living with metastatic lung cancer. She receives care at a treatment center near her home in rural southern Illinois. There are larger hospitals over an hour away in St. Louis, but she doesn’t have the time or financial resources to travel there as often as she would need to. Fortunately, the cancer center near Ruth’s home boasts excellent staff — including her oncologist, experienced nurses, a pharmacist, and a social worker. There are more than 2,100 community cancer centers just like Ruth’s across the country — many located outside…
By Gwinnett Ladson, M.D. The phrase “health disparities” is in the news a lot these days, mostly – and understandably – in relation to Covid-19 and its impact on underserved communities and people of color. But it’s not a new concept. Health disparities – differences in health status between certain populations compared to more advantaged populations – impact communities across many diseases and pose a real-life danger to patients unless we act on them with the same urgency. Take the day-to-day realities of my job, for example. As a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, I know the incidence rate…
NASHVILLE, TN – Every four years the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) grades the nation’s infrastructure. The ASCE released America’s 2021 Report Card last week. The overall GPA counting seventeen categories was C-minus. There were 22 weather and climate disasters in the U.S. that cost at least $1 billion in 2020, the most in history, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. If the U.S. does not pay its overdue infrastructure bill, ASCE said by 2039 the U.S. economy will lose $10 trillion in growth and exports will decline by $2.4 trillion. More than 3 million jobs will be lost…
