Republicans Former U.S. Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty endorsed by President Donald Trump, won a contested Republican primary for an open U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee. The Nashville businessman emerged from a tough challenge from trauma surgeon Manny Sethi to clinch his party’s nomination for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander. Trump threw his support behind Hagerty, who contended that Sethi wasn’t a good enough advocate for Trump during the 2016 election. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, a white lawmaker with a reputation as a moderate Democrat, defeated Keeda Haynes, a Black public defender, in the primary for just one of two Democratic-held congressional seats in Tennessee. Haynes argued that the Middle Tennessee district should be represented by someone more progressive, while Cooper countered that he has voted overwhelmingly with Democrats during his long political tenure. Memphis environmentalist, Black activist and single mom Marquita Bradshaw won the Democratic primary for an open U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee on Thursday. Bradshaw defeated Nashville attorney and former Army helicopter pilot James Mackler, who had snagged an endorsement from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and others. Bradshaw will face former U.S. Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty, who defeated Nashville trauma surgeon Manny Sethi in the Republican primary.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee extended his state of emergency declaration until at least Aug. 29.  As of June 29, 2020 Tennessee had 14,743 active cases of coronavirus, with 592 deaths and nearly 2,600 hospitalizations since the outbreak began. These growing figures show the state is averaging about 43 new corona virus-related hospitalizations per day.  This is also the highest reported rate since early May.  Health officials detected about 4,200 new infections since Friday June 26, 2020, which is the most reported number of cases in any four-day span since the beginning of the outbreak.

Herman Cain, a business executive who sought the Republican nomination in 2012, had been hospitalized with the coronavirus in the Atlanta area.  He attended Mr. Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma in June 2020 and tested positive for the coronavirus shortly after. Mr.  Cain rose from poverty in the segregated South to become chief executive of a successful pizza chain and then thrust himself into the national spotlight by seeking the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.  Mr. Cain was 74.

John Robert Lewis, the son of sharecroppers who survived a brutal beating by police during a landmark 1965 march in Selma, Alabama, to become a towering figure of the civil rights movement and a longtime US congressman, has died after a six-month battle with cancer. He was 80.  Lewis died on the same day as civil rights leader the Rev.
