CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted our lives from professional to personal, but have we thought about how it has affected children’s mental health? SHANGHAI — A team of international researchers reveals that people who work night shifts are at increased risk of developing an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rhythm called Atrial Fibrillation (AF). The findings of the study were published in the European Heart Journal. The study is the first to investigate the links between night shift work and AF. Using information from 283,657 people in the UK Biobank database, researchers found that the longer and more frequently people worked night shifts over their lifetimes, the greater their risk of AF. Night shift work was also linked to an increased risk of heart disease, but not to stroke or…
“Put a cork in it” is generally a rude way to tell someone to stop talking. But when it comes to Covid-19, it may be just the ticket to ending the pandemic. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot are working on a novel approach to the novel coronavirus: a chemical “cork” that plugs up the opening the SARS CoV-2 virus uses to attach to cells in the body. The approach is very different than the way most of the current batch of Covid-19 vaccines work. The latter target the spike protein on the virus’ outer envelope. That…
NAIROBI, Kenya — Francis Lokichang, 45, from Lodwar in Kenya’s far-flung Turkana County, is a relieved man after the government defied a court order and declined to renew the licenses of four Chinese-owned firms for the commercial slaughter of donkeys. Lokichang, a father of seven, has been keeping donkeys for more than a decade and owns 34 animals, his main source of income. “We have unreliable means of transport in this area,” he told Zenger News. “Therefore, donkeys come in handy when fetching water from far-off areas, and also when transporting goods and people from one area to another. We hire…
Some COVID-19 patients report experiencing symptoms including fatigue, muscle pain, brain fog and headaches long after the infection has cleared up — so-called Long COVID — and now researchers in Ireland say abnormal blood clotting may be the key. Even once inflammation levels returned to normal, high levels of blood clotting were found among patients with persistent COVID symptoms, compared to healthy controls, in a recent study by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin. “Millions of people are already dealing with the symptoms of Long COVID syndrome, and…
Israeli humanitarian aid organizations SmartAID and IsraAID are sending help in the wake of two earthquakes that struck Haiti on August 14. The Haitian government declared a state of emergency after at least 304 people died and 1,800 people were injured in a 7.2 magnitude quake off the northern coast, and a 6.6 magnitude quake in the south near Les Cayes collapsed buildings and historic cathedrals. Rescue and relief efforts are especially urgent because Tropical Storm Grace is expected to bring heavy rains and possible flooding and mudslides this week. IsraAID’s initial emergency response team will include Haitian former staff…
