WASHINGTON — A new study states that people taking certain drugs to lower blood sugar for type 2 diabetes had less amyloid in the brain— a biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease. Published in the journal ‘American Academy of Neurology,’ the study also got hold of the fact that people taking these drugs, called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, showed slower cognitive decline than people in the other two groups. In people with type 2 diabetes, the body no longer efficiently uses insulin to control blood sugar. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, also known as gliptins, can be prescribed when other diabetes drugs do not work. They help control…

A new kind of underwater scanner can map surfaces underwater so precisely that its sensors pick up the thin ropes scuba divers use to find their way back to a boat in heavy currents. Video released by the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy shows an officer’s-eye-view of footage coming back from an unmanned boat called the Otter Pro, armed with the technology. New objects appear on screen, moment by moment: Some are rocky features of the ocean floor, but others are machines whose backgrounds and contents are mysteries. A three-man team worked together on the test voyage at Horsea Lake, a…

Federal data indicated demand for petroleum products in the U.S. is finally slipping, but analysts told Zenger market focus on Wednesday was squarely on White House statements on energy prices. The U.S. Energy Information Administration, part of the Energy Department, provides weekly data on commercial inventories of crude oil and refined petroleum products such as gasoline. Broad-based gains are usually indicative of lackluster demand, while the opposite holds true for declines. The data showed commercial crude oil inventories declined approximately 400,000 barrels from the previous week, and remain about 6 percent below the five-year range for this time of year.…

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, akin to FEMA in the United States, said search and rescue teams are looking for at least one missing person. The water level has reached 13 feet in some areas, according to the agency, following Aug. 11 rains that left entire communities seeking shelter. “There are places that we have not heard from yet,” Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters. CORK, Ireland — A new study has introduced a novel approach to reverse aspects of aging-related deterioration in the brain and cognitive function via the microbes in the gut. Researchers from Alimentary Pharmabotic Centre Microbiome Ireland (APC) at University College Cork (UCC) published the findings in the scientific journal Nature Aging. As our population ages, one of the key global challenges is to develop strategies to maintain healthy brain function. “The aging process yields dramatic alterations in the microbiota, which is linked to poorer health and frailty in elderly populations,” the paper said. “However, there is limited evidence for a mechanistic role of the…
