Enjoy stunning scenery and adventure in Bryson City, NC

For a great getaway for all ages, head to Bryson City, NC and discover a host of outdoor adventures within the Great Smoky Mountains. Enjoy breathtaking views whether trekking the Appalachian trails, rafting on the Nantahala River or gliding on a zipline through the Nantahala Gorge and Smoky Mountains.

Highly recommended is a whitewater rafting adventure through the Nantahala Outdoor Center. The guided tour is one of the most spectacular ways to take in the scenic beauty and biodiversity of the area. The Nantahala River is a dam-controlled river with water pulled from the bottom of Lake Nantahala about 250 feet below the surface. This makes for a cool water temp at 50° year around, no matter how high the humidity.

An expert guide will share anecdotes of the region’s history, natural wonders and more. Get firsthand insights of the wild as the Jewel Weed, which has leaves that shimmer when held underwater, but then are completely dry after being immersed. Holding true to nature’s profound truth that the cure is near the cause, the plant often grows near poison ivy, and is said to help cure the rash. Home to over 600 species of oak trees and 1,500 species of flowering plants, Bryson City exceeds the number of plant species found in all of Europe.

Set apart from the others, the Nantahala rafting tour is the only one where you paddle back to the post, rather than having to board a bus to return back.

“Nantahala”originates from the Cherokee Tribe and means “Land of the Noonday Sun.” This is inspired by the natural setting of the deep gorges which only get sunlight midday while the sun is directly overhead.

The 500-acre main campus offers great options for lodging and dining, so that an entire weekend can be spent in one location. Recommended is staying onsite in one of the cabins, offering the conveniences of home and within minutes from the dining and shopping.

The River’s End Restaurant and Bar is a respite after a day of outdoor fun. As a starter, checkout the Fisherman’s Stew with hominy and trout. And speaking of trout, highly recommended is the Pecan Panko Encrusted Trout, served with sherpa rice.

Enjoy various courses at the center including Paddling School and SOLO Wilderness Medicine courses along the Appalachian trail.

For a weekend of outdoor renewal, relaxation and adventure head to Bryson City, where all ages will embrace the fun and scenic outdoors. For more information, visit Nantahala Outdoor Center.
