Republican Matt Van Epps and Democrat Aftyn Behn will meet in the special general election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District after Tuesday’s Oct. 7 primary.
The Dec. 2 contest will determine the successor to retired U.S. Rep. Mark Green and could reshape the state’s congressional balance, with Democrats eyeing gains in a district that spans parts of Middle and West Tennessee.
The race has drawn heavy outside spending—nearly $3.4 million from billionaire-backed groups—largely centered on the GOP primary.
About $1.1 million went toward ads attacking state Rep. Jody Barrett, while nearly $1.3 million boosted former Tennessee General Services Commissioner Matt Van Epps. President Donald Trump weighed in days before the vote, endorsing Van Epps and headlining a tele-rally on the eve of Election Day, an intervention that jolted the contest.
