A composite filling (white filling) is a tooth colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore decayed teeth.  Composites are also used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the color and shape of any disfigured teeth and composites are used as replacement restorations for the silver amalgam fillings.

How Are Composite

Fillings Placed?

Once the decay has been removed from a tooth, the dentist will begin to place the composite filling material in layers in which each layer will be light cured with a specialized light to harden each layer.  When the process is finished, the dentist then will shape the composite with finishing burs to restore the tooth to the ideal form with grooves and anatomy and the restoration is then polished.

What is the Cost?

Prices vary, the cost can be up to two times the price of the silver filling. Many dental insurance plans cover the cost of the composite up the price of the silver filling and the patient is responsible for paying the difference.  As more dentist use composite fillings insurance companies are more likely to increase their coverage of composite fillings.

Composite fillings are generally the restoration of choice because they can improve aesthetics and the shade can be blended to match the actual tooth and once completed there is no wait time for the filling to harden before eating.  Composites are best used for small restorations and your dentist will recommend what type of filling is best for you.
