Dee Hammonds, Dean of Fine Arts at Warner Arts Magnet Elementary School, received the Queen Smith Award for Commitment to Urban Public Education from the Council of the Great City Schools and McGraw-Hill Education at the Council’s fall conference in Philadelphia this week. John William “Billy” Lynch, who served six Nashville mayors over a distinguished 45-year career of public service for Metro Nashville Government, and who played a significant role in the integration of sports in Nashville and Tennessee as a student-athlete at Father Ryan High School in the early 1960s, passed away this morning after a short illness. Meharry Medical College marked a historic milestone last week with the ribbon-cutting of the newly renovated Dorothy Brown Hall, a facility that now houses some of the most advanced computing power in the institution’s history.
