NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to the Tennessee State University College of Engineering to recruit minority transfer students from regional community colleges. The award will provide 45 scholarships over five years to students who want to earn bachelor’s degrees in engineering, math or computer science, the school said in a news release. Mr. Jesse L. Burns, Jr. served as the President of Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida from 1993-1996 and the 10th President of the Connectional Lay Organization from 2003-2009. His local church was St. Paul AME Church in Ocala, Florida. Mr. Burns died on September 16, one day after his 70th birthday. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.

NASHVILLE, TN — An array of Nashville leaders stand united to oppose Nashville from being gutted by an upcoming charter amendment proposed by an entity calling itself “4GoodGovernment.” The amendment would create a $332 million deficit for this fiscal year, threaten Metro’s credit rating, constrain the city’s ability to set property taxes to pay for services, and result in a suspension of capital projects.
