By Rosetta Miller-Perry, Publisher/CEO The Tennessee Tribune NASHVILLE, TN — Nashville’s Black community has had stellar political representation for decades, with Blacks who sought office not to feather their pockets or enhance their social status, but to serve and aid those in need, and continue the battle for social justice and equality in the great state of Tennessee. Whether it was established figures like the Hon. Senator Avon Williams and the Hon. Senator Thelma Harper and also the students from American Baptist College, Tennessee State and Fisk Universities who took on the forces of state sanctioned segregation during the sit-ins and created a legacy with dignity and…

By Rosetta Miller Perry The inane, inaccurate and frequently bigoted remarks of Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene have long made her one of Congress’ biggest embarrassments, as well as horrible evidence that there’s still lots of backwardness and hatred among many of the voters of her Georgia district. That a majority of them put this woman in office remains a state and national disaster. Does anyone think a Black woman or any woman of color saying and doing the things that Greene has regularly would not have long ago been the subject of a recall effort, if they were…

We will always remember that they created a legacy with dignity and courage. Unfortunately, in the current political environment, Senator Brenda…
By Rosetta Miller-Perry Tucker Carlson has made racist commentaries, the foundation of his show on Fox News since it began in 2016. This white bigot had a long track record of fanatic, sexist and homophobic statements and comments during his days as a staff writer for the now defunct Weekly Standard and other right wing magazines. But since joining Fox News, Carlson’s turned racist pronouncements into a profitable art form with a $6 million annual salary the same way the late Rush Limbaugh did on radio for an annual salary of $84.5 million for decades. It was only two years…
By Rosetta Miller Perry There are a few country artists whom I enjoy and admire, but my favorite by a large margin is Willie Nelson for many reasons. First, he’s a strong supporter of social justice. Second, he has written many great songs that Black artists have covered, most notably “Funny How Time Slips Away.” Third, he has worked with such Black artists as Wynton Marsalis and Mavis Staples and even recorded a reggae album. Fourth, at 88 he remains passionate and involved in numerous causes even though he could easily just sit back and enjoy his wealth. This past…

By Rosetta Miller-Perry This week, our young people, the nation and the world have had a chance to see both the best and worse of America in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings regarding President Biden’s nomination of the Hon. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court. Jackson handled herself with extreme dignity, responding to often stupid, KKK racist irrelevant and insulting questions with detailed, thoughtful responses, and remaining respectful to Senators and Congressmen. She was often cut off in mid-answer, interrupting or refusing to let her complete responses, and just behaving with the standard contempt and animus…

By Rosetta Miller Perry In today’s right-wing media universe, racist attacks against Vice-President Kamala Harris are a regular occurrence. If you believe the rhetoric of such outlets as the New York Post, the Vice President at best is unable to properly communicate complex issues to the public, a fancy way of saying she’s dumb. Keep in mind they are maligning a woman who’s not only a graduate of Howard and the University of California, Hastings College of the law, but a former state attorney general and US senator. But many of the same people who shamelessly excuse every idiotic comment…
By Rosetta Miller Perry It didn’t take long for the Republican Party to once again show itself an enemy of Black progress and opportunity. Although President Biden announced while he was running for President that if elected he would do so once an opening emerged, as soon as he announced plans to nominate Ketanji Brown Jackson to the court right-wing reactionaries, among them Tennessee’s Senator Marsha Blackburn, began raising their voices in opposition. According to Senator Blackburn the timing is wrong due to the Russian invasion of Urkaine. In Blackburn’s words, “Once again, Biden is putting the demands of the…
