MEMPHIS, TN — Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins marked her 100-day milestone in office with a comprehensive review of transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing educational outcomes across Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS). In a special address – with nearly 700 in attendance and 9,000 watching online, “Building a Legacy: The First 100 Days with Superintendent Feagins,” drew enthusiastic support from the community and highlighted the district’s progress under her leadership.

“Bringing the community along the journey has remained a priority for me since taking the helm on April 1,” said Superintendent Feagins. “Seeing a packed room filled with excitement on a Wednesday night was incredibly encouraging, as we reflected on the first 100 days and shared a bold vision for elevating the excellence of Memphis-Shelby County Schools.”

Dr. Feagins outlined several key initiatives, highlighting her commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community engagement. Under the banners of SUPE, SOAR, and IGNITE Schools, she introduced a strategic framework to provide focused support from Central Office departments for each cluster of schools.

    Student Achievement

    • C.O.M.E (Count On Me Every Day) to Win will serve as a call to action for students and families to be present on day one and every day, as the District prioritizes student attendance.

    • Through the new Central Office CHAMPS program, Central Office staff will mentor 15,000 middle school students.

    Business Operations

    • Highlighting professional growth, the MSCS L.E.A.D. Academy will empower employees through career advancement and leadership development.

    • Addressing infrastructure needs, Project BUILD is an ambitious plan to enhance school facilities and create optimal learning environments.

    • For better communication, the new “WheresTheBus?” app will provide families with real-time student transportation updates.

    • Upcoming Next Up Hiring Blitzes will ensure the right people are in the right place to serve students, staff, and families.

    • Starting July 12 in Birmingham, Ala., the district will host a recruitment event for certified PK-12 teachers.

    • On July 16 and July 18, the Next Up Hiring Blitz will go nationwide with a virtual recruitment effort.

    • On July 20, the district will hold a hiring event at the Teaching & Learning Academy for nutrition services and facilities positions, along with a recruitment event in Jackson, Miss., for certified PK-12 teachers.

    Inclusive Excellence

    • MSCS Matters will strategically extend welcome center hours to accommodate families with non-traditional work schedules.

    • Legacy University will serve as a comprehensive resource hub, designed to empower parents with the necessary tools for effectively supporting their children’s educational journey.

    Strategic Communication and Partnerships

    • To strengthen community ties, Dr. Feagins has established the Office of Partnerships and Development, ensuring every school is paired with a dedicated community or business partner.

    • The Next Up National initiative, starting July 12, in Birmingham, Ala., will aim to attract more top-tier educators to MSCS.

    Next-Level Readiness

    • By prioritizing key partnerships, MSCS will establish apprenticeship and externship opportunities for students, integrating practical experiences into their curriculum to better prepare them for their future.

Dr. Feagins concluded the landmark event by reaffirming her commitment to community engagement, student voice, communication, and consistent investments that allow every child the opportunity to Learn. Lead. and Leave a Legacy.
