A new book on minority women as groundbreaking oral health professionals lists Meharry School of Dentistry faculty and alumni among those who have set the standard for their discipline.
Undaunted Trailblazers: Minority Women Leaders for Oral Health by Shelia S. Price, Jeanne C. Sinkford and Marilyn P. Woolfolk is a compelling read featuring the stories of 31 contemporary minority women including three current Meharry SOD leaders and three Meharry alumni.
Spotlighted from the Meharry School of Dentistry are Cherae Farmer, D.D.S. ’90, MSPH ’94 dean; Machelle Thompson, associate dean, compliance; and Sandra G. Harris, D.D.S. ’84, chair, Department of Orthodontics. Alumni featured are Winifred Booker, D.D.S. ’87; Agnes Donahue, D.D.S. ’75 and Melanie Mayberry, D.D.S. ’94.
According to the publisher, the book “captures the spirit, voices and wisdom of extraordinary women of color who have surmounted obstacles and found a way to beat the odds, transcend any limitations, and capitalize on opportunities to advance oral health.”
The book elevates those who have succeeded in a male-dominated profession and reinforces their relevance to achieving health, racial and gender equity.
Revenue from book sales are designated to the Enid A. Neidle Scholar in Residence Program for Women at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) to benefit the professional development of current and emerging minority women leaders in oral health.
