    Rep. Steve Cohen Endorses Smiley for Tennessee Governor

    MEMPHIS, TN — On Tuesday October 12, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) endorsed JB Smiley, Jr. and his campaign for Governor of Tennessee.

    “Councilman Smiley is smart, energetic, and in touch with the needs of working people,” said Congressman Cohen. “Having a Governor who understands the needs and importance of the cities as well as the towns is of importance for benefits to be extended equitably.”

    JB launched his campaign for Governor just over a month ago and has already garnered support from leaders throughout the state. His message of bringing urban, suburban, and rural Tennesseans together to create more job opportunities, safer and healthier communities, equitable healthcare access, and more robust educational programs, is resonating throughout the Volunteer State.

    “I’m honored to receive the endorsement of Congressman Cohen. He is a consummate leader and distinguished public servant who has delivered for the people of his district,” noted Councilman Smiley. “Congressman Cohen has seen the failed leadership of the current Governor and sees the change that we will bring to Nashville to deliver results for every community in Tennessee.”

    A native Memphian, JB Smiley Jr. is an attorney and a member of the Memphis City Council. As a council member, JB is Chair of the Public Works, Transportation, and General Services Committee and the council liaison for the Urban Art Commission. On the City Council, JB has delivered for his community, implementing the Memphis Academy of Civic Engagement, the Memphis Police Department Transparency Portal, and amending the Eviction Set Out Ordinance.

    Congressman Steve Cohen has represented the Memphis-area in the United State House of Representatives since 2007. He is a fourth-generation Memphian who currently serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, House Committee on Natural Resources and House Committee on the Judiciary, where he chairs the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. Like JB, Congressman Cohen has fought for economic, racial and social justice throughout Memphis.
