Tennessee State University has announced two new appointments in its esteemed Aristocrat of Bands music program. James Sexton has been named the Interim Band Director of the Grammy Award-winning Aristocrat of Bands (AOB), and Dwight Pope will serve as the Director of Cheer and Dance that includes the esteemed TSU Sophisticated Ladies.

Sexton, a TSU alumnus and former band member of the AOB, brings a wealth of experience in this position. Having served as the assistant director of the AOB since 1998, Sexton has been integral in shaping the band’s distinctive sound and performance style. His contributions were vital to the AOB’s unprecedented success, including the historic 2023 Grammy-Award win, making TSU the first collegiate marching band to ever receive this honor.

“It’s an honor to serve as interim band director of the Aristocrat of Bands,” said Sexton. “I am committed to upholding its proud traditions while enhancing the dynamic performances that define the AOB.”

In the other appointment, alumnus Dwight Pope will expand his current role as cheer coach to become director of Dance and Cheer. His extensive experience will be invaluable in guiding the continued success and elevation of TSU’s dance program.

“I am honored to continue to forward the torch of excellence from Tennessee State University, ensuring the continued elevation and success of our program,” said Pope.

Dr. Bridgett Golman, vice president for Student Affairs, said, “Both the Aristocrat of Bands and TSU Sophisticated Ladies boasts a long and distinguished history of performances. They are each a significant source of pride for Tennessee State University and the broader Nashville community.” Golman is excited about the next chapter for the marching band and dance program.

Under the new leadership, AOB and the TSU Sophisticated Ladies will continue preparations for its upcoming performances, community engagements, and the 2025 athletic season. The university has initiated a search for a permanent band director and will provide updates on the search process as they become available.
