The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to launch a hate crime investigation into a possibly bias-motivated arson fire at an interracial family’s home in Tennessee. On Nov. 1, the family’s house in Ripley, Tenn., was reduced to rubble in a fire that started while the family was on vacation. Jim Cooper (TN-05) and the Tennessee Innocence Project announced the Department of Justice awarded the organization with a $300,000 for its “Collaborative Justice in Tennessee” program. The funds will go to further a collaboration between the Tennessee Innocence Project and the Davidson County Office of the District Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU) to review instances of wrongfully convicted cases. NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mayor John Cooper will join Jewish community leaders to celebrate the start of Hanukkah during the 2021 Menorah Lighting Ceremony. The ceremony will take place on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. in front of the Historic Metro Courthouse and will also be streamed on Mayor John Cooper’s Facebook page. Rabbi Yitzchok Tiechtel Chabad of Nashville will provide a brief history of the menorah, Hanukkah and the significance of the ceremony. The ceremony will conclude with the lighting of the menorah. Malikah Shabazz, the daughter of civil rights activist Malcolm X, was found dead inside her Brooklyn home Monday evening, according to two senior police officials. The 56-year-old Shabazz was found unconscious and unresponsive inside her home on East 28th Street in Midwood just before 4:30 p.m., the police officials told NBC New York. She was later pronounced dead. The city’s medical examiner responded to the scene, and said the incident was not deemed suspicious. A cause of death has yet to be determined.
