Nashville, Tenn. (TN Tribune) — Mandisa Hundley, renowned for her vibrant spirit and powerful vocals, tragically passed away at her Nashville home yesterday. Known mononymously as Mandisa, she was a celebrated figure in the Christian music world, an American Idol finalist, and a former member of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. She was 47.

The sad news was confirmed by her public relations team, who stated, “We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased. At this time, we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

Mandisa first caught national attention when she competed on the fifth season of American Idol, finishing in the top ten. This platform catapulted her into a successful music career that earned her multiple Grammy and Dove Awards, including two K-LOVE Fan Awards.

David Pierce, K-LOVE Chief Media Officer, expressed his sorrow, noting, “Mandisa loved Jesus, and she used her unusually extensive platform to talk about Him at every turn. Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart. Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles. Mandisa’s struggles are over. She is with the God she sang about now. While we are saddened, Mandisa is home.”

Mandisa was born on October 2, 1976, in Citrus Heights, California, and raised there before embarking on a musical journey that saw her graduating from Fisk University with a Bachelor of Music degree, focusing on vocal performance. Her career was marked by her resilience and willingness to speak openly about personal challenges, including those she faced during her stint on American Idol when judge Simon Cowell made disparaging remarks about her weight. Demonstrating her grace, Mandisa famously forgave Cowell, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness.

Her musical influences ranged from Whitney Houston to Def Leppard, showcasing her versatile taste and ability to cross musical boundaries. She was not only a vocalist but an inspiration, often using her platform to address and uplift those struggling with their own personal battles.

Mandisa’s passing leaves a void in the music industry and among her multitude of fans. No further details about her death have been released. Her family and friends are in our thoughts during this profoundly challenging time.
