NASHVILLE, TN — There will be something new for Tennessee State University football this year. While the pandemic wiped out their fall year, the Tigers are going to play a seven-game Ohio Valley Conference slate in the winter and spring, beginning with Jacksonville State Feb. 23. All the games will be on Sundays and four are set for Hale Stadium. Unlike most seasons, these games are not practice, but actual competitive contests that will count in the standings.

That’s not the only good news coming from the TSU campus. The athletic department also announced last week that former UT star and NFL wide receiver Peerless Price was joining the football team’s coaching staff. He is serving as a volunteer assistant. Price played nine years in the NFL, most of that with the Buffalo Bills. Price also played for the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys. Head Coach Rod Reed said that the Tigers were very pleased to have Price on their staff.

“Peerless will be a great addition to the staff,” Reed said in a statement on the school’s website. “He has played the game at a high level collegiality and professionally. He will provide a wealth of knowledge to the staff and we’re glad to have him aboard.”

Meanwhile the young Tiger basketball team prepares for the final six games of its season, with four of them at the Gentry Center. They dropped the finale of their four game road trip 86-72 to Eastern Illinois Saturday. Point guard Mark Freeman had a strong game with 19 second half points and 28 overall. The Tigers are now 3-14 overall, and 2-12 in the OVC. They begin the final home stand Thursday night against Morehead State.
