The future of education in Memphis took a decisive step on December 16, 2024, as the Shelby County Commission voted 10-0-0 to approve $33,910,683 in funding for the new Frayser High School. The resolution, presented by Commissioner Thornton, passed with 10 votes in favor, to pass the motion marking a transformative moment for education in Memphis.

    The comprehensive funding package includes:

    • Total project investment of $112 million

    • Strategic allocation of $33.9 million in immediate funding

    • Additional $9 million over 5 years for municipal schools’ construction roadmap

    • Maintained commitment to finding a solution for a new school in Cordova

    Building Strong Schools

After previous proposals failed due to lack of votes, this new framework represents a breakthrough in educational infrastructure development. The project demonstrates a balanced approach to community needs while ensuring no negative impact on other planned educational initiatives across the county.

The New State-of-the-Art Facility will Feature:

    • Advanced broadcast facilities

    • Cutting-edge graphic design
            classrooms

    • Modern sports facilities

    • Innovative open learning spaces

    • JROTC facilities

MSCS Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins emphasized the district’s unwavering commitment: “When we’re talking about kids, there’s nothing that we aren’t willing to do for our youngest leaders.” She noted that while infrastructure is central to the conversation, the focus remains on the 111,000 young leaders who represent the future alumni of Memphis-Shelby County Schools.

The resolution received strong backing from Commissioners:

Clay-Bibbs, Ford, Lowery, Avant, Sugarman, Caswell, Wright, Thornton, Brooks, Whaley

    Next Steps:

As Dr. Feagins stated, “We are grateful for this investment to kickstart overdue school improvements and provide students with the safe, modern spaces they deserve in the Frayser community and beyond.” marking a new chapter in educational excellence for Memphis and Shelby County.
