NASHVILLE, TN —City leaders, community members, neighbors, and friends joined together on April 7th, to commemorate the naming of two streets in north Nashville in honor of former Metro Council Members Chester Hughes and Dr. Carolyn Baldwin Tucker. The named streets are located within the new Village by the Creek neighborhood in District 3. Village by the Creek is a 58 single family home neighborhood developed by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville.

Chester Hughes served as the councilmember in District 3 from 2003 until his death in 2004 after a brief illness. He fought to have utility lines constructed underground in new residential subdivisions and was instrumental in bringing retail establishments to District 3, including the Walmart at Skyline Commons and the Walgreens at the corner of Dickerson Road and Old Hickory Boulevard.

Dr. Carolyn Baldwin Tucker was the first African American woman elected as a councilmember-at-large in Davidson County in 1999. She is a retired school principal and served as a former administrator in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools with more than 50 years of experience as an educator.

District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer Gamble sponsored legislation recognizing the naming of the new streets which the Metro Council approved in 2020. “Chester Hughes and Dr. Carolyn Baldwin Tucker served our community and this city with compassion and conviction,” said Councilmember Gamble. “I appreciate their leadership and when given the opportunity to name the new streets, I couldn’t think of two better names to represent the hope, strength, and endurance of this growing community.”
