    TSU Athletics Recognizes Qualls for 25 Years of Service

    Dr. Phyllis Qualls-Brooks was recognized by TSU Athletics for her 25 years of announcing TSU athletic events.

    NASHVILLE, TN — Tennessee State University Athletics recognized Dr. Phyllis Qualls during the recent John Merritt Classic for her 25 years of announcing TSU athletic events. The former TSU public relations director has been a part of hundreds of events at Hale Stadium on TSU’s main campus, as well as at Nissan Stadium and other venues.

    TSU Athletics Director Teresa Phillips said, “We are proud to salute her on this milestone occasion of untiring service.”

    Qualls was presented a plaque on the field by Ms. Phillips. She was accompanied by former staff members Terri Woodmore and Derrick Smith, and family friend Tonya Lowe, who all expressed their pride for her. There was a special video presentation from her daughter, Lovette Curry, and grandsons, Alexander and Samuel.  “Mom, we are so proud of you; congratulations,” followed by “Congratulations Grandma Phe Phe.”

    Additionally, former TSU public relations staff member Artis Twyman, director of media relations for the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, prepared a special video tribute. “Dr. Qualls, you allowed me to intern in the TSU public relations office, hired me, and then encouraged me to get involved with NFL sports media. I would not be where I am without you. You are among the best in your field throughout the country.”

    department with Qualls from 1994-2002, said, “Phyllis is a strong leader and a driving force.  She is creative, committed, and unmatched in her skills and ability.  She does not accept ‘no’ and strives for ‘yes’ in all she does.”

    Pastor Howard Jones of Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church explained that Dr. Qualls has served as a communications and marketing consultant for the church’s outreach ministry, Kingdom Café & Grill.   “Dr. Qualls has continuously shown creativity, vision and drive. I applaud her for this special recognition.”

    Clinton Gray, chairman of TSU’s John Merritt Classic Committee and a longtime friend and supporter, said, “Phyllis is the consummate professional and most deserving of this recognition.”
