Memphis, TN– In a heartwarming demonstration of leadership and commitment, Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins delighted students and staff at Idlewild Elementary by stepping in as a substitute teacher for the day. Dr. Feagins’ surprise visit was a gesture of appreciation towards second-grade teacher Ms. Rebecca Holcombe, an educator of 10 years.
Early this morning, Dr. Feagins made a playful remark to Ms. Holcombe about teaching her class for the day. What initially seemed like a joke turned into a delightful reality as Dr. Feagins confirmed her plan with a cheerful, “Yes, all day—surprise!”
Dr. Feagins engaged fully with the students, leading lessons in reading and math, participating in playground activities, and sharing stories during lunch. Her presence not only energized the classroom but also provided her with valuable insights into the students’ needs and experiences.
Principal Kiersten Schnacke expressed her gratitude, saying, “We’re thankful to Dr. Feagins for honoring Ms. Holcombe. As both an educator and parent here, Rebecca uniquely understands our community’s needs. Her commitment goes beyond the classroom, making her truly deserving of this honor.”
This initiative follows Dr. Feagins’ recent introduction of a district-wide “We Care Day” for mental health. She plans to continue substituting monthly at different schools, reinforcing her commitment to both leadership and hands-on education.
