Leah Zuercher, a force hailing from the heartland of Celina, has defied conventions and forged her path in the welding industry, challenging stereotypes and breaking barriers along the way.

Zuercher’s journey into welding commenced in 8th grade when she meticulously explored post-secondary options, ultimately electing welding as her career path. Throughout her junior and senior years, she showcased her talents in Metal Sculpture competitions through Skills USA, clinching impressive 8th and 5th place finishes statewide.

Post-graduation, after a brief stint in youth ministry, Zuercher wasted no time in enrolling at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology. Accustomed to being the sole female in her high school welding class, she seamlessly transitioned into the larger, equally male-dominated environment.

For over 8 years, Zuercher has been a cornerstone at Oxidizers, navigating the challenges of being a woman in blue-collar work. Despite facing relentless comments, biases, and unwanted advances, Zuercher found unwavering support in her mentor, Chad Lamons, whose encouragement and advocacy propelled her forward.

Navigating male-dominated spaces was no easy feat for Zuercher. Initially daunted, she quickly found her stride, asserting her skills and earning respect. Though plagued by moments of self-doubt, her passion for welding and her unwavering determination to challenge stereotypes fueled her journey.

Reflecting on gender diversity in blue-collar work, Zuercher notes a gradual increase in female representation, both on the factory floor and in leadership roles.

In terms of initiatives to promote gender equity, Zuercher believes in leading by example, daring to venture into uncharted territory and paving the way for future generations of women in blue-collar industries.

As she continues her journey, Zuercher remains steadfast in her commitment to sharing her experiences and insights with fellow women aspiring to break into traditionally male-dominated fields. For her, the road ahead is illuminated by encouragement, perseverance, and the unshakeable belief that gender should never hinder one’s pursuit of success.
