The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra is taking a significant stride toward diversity and inclusion in classical music with the release of its groundbreaking album, “Harmony in Black,” marking the inaugural entry in its “Musical Landscapes in Color” series.
Supported by the American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact (AmFam Institute) and other sponsors, “Harmony in Black” showcases compositions by renowned artists Patrice Rushen, a distinguished composer and jazz pianist, and Dr. Bill Banfield, an award-winning composer and recipient of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his multifaceted contributions to music, literature, and education. The album, recorded live on Friday, October 13th, 2023, under the baton of Maestro Andrew Sewell, is a testament to the orchestra’s commitment to amplifying the voices of diverse composers across the United States
Dr. Banfield, whose book “Landscapes in Color” laid the groundwork for the series by featuring interviews with top Black composers, emphasized the importance of redefining the classical music canon to include a broader spectrum of voices. “These were like top-notch composers, American composers, but they weren’t being played,” remarked Banfield. “That really set us up for really engaging our generation in what should be the new canon for American modern orchestras.”
The initiative aims to address the persistent racial disparities within the classical music realm, as highlighted by a 2016 study revealing underrepresentation of Black and Latino musicians and staff in U.S. orchestras. “Musical Landscapes in Color” serves as a platform to honor Black composers’ contributions while challenging systemic barriers that hinder their recognition and advancement.
Nyra Jordan, Social Impact Investment Director at AmFam Institute, expressed pride in supporting initiatives that broaden access to classical music. “This initiative, starting with its debut album, is opening doors to classical music for those from underrepresented groups,” said Jordan.
“Harmony in Black” heralds the beginning of a five-album series dedicated to spotlighting Black composers’ contributions. Available for streaming on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music, the album invites listeners to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of diverse musical expressions.
The forthcoming releases in the series promise to continue the exploration of musical contributions from marginalized composers, fostering a more inclusive and vibrant classical music landscape for generations to come.
