NASHVILLE, TN – The Sylvan Heights Neighborhood Association is thrilled to announce the completion of its mural on the historic CSX railroad underpass on 37th Avenue North. This transformative public art project, funded by an FY24 Metro Arts Thrive Award, brings vibrant imagery to an iconic gateway that has stood as a cornerstone of the community since 1920.

The mural, created by Stephen Sloan, owner and creator of Never Xtinct, and his wife and creative partner Alex Sloan, celebrates the unique essence of Sylvan Heights. As a former resident of the neighborhood, Stephen brought a deep connection to this project, capturing the spirit of the community through thoughtful imagery.

The artwork features characteristic rolling hills that define the neighborhood’s landscape; a graceful ballerina honoring the Nashville Ballet, which is located nearby; the beloved community cats that embody its unique character; and a spectrum of colorful houses celebrating the neighborhood’s diversity and charm.

This project is a testament to the dedication of the Sylvan Heights Neighborhood Association, led by Mary Breen, Ingrid Anderson, and Carrie Leffingwell, and supported by a team of passionate volunteers.

“This mural turns the CSX underpass into a welcoming gateway, showcasing the vibrant spirit and unique character of Sylvan Heights,” said Mary Breen of the Sylvan Heights Neighborhood Association. “More than just a neighborhood landmark, it’s public art for the entire community to enjoy, celebrating our shared creativity and diversity.”

Metro Arts Nashville’s Thrive Award funding played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life, highlighting their commitment to fostering community-driven public art across the city.

    Dedication Ceremony

The community will celebrate this achievement with a dedication ceremony on Saturday, November 30, at 2 PM, hosted by Metro Councilwoman Brenda Gadd and the Sylvan Heights Neighborhood Association. The event will take place at the mural site on 37th Avenue North, inviting neighbors, supporters, and art enthusiasts to gather to celebrate this new neighborhood landmark.
