| 5.8 Percent: In November 2023, the Black unemployment rate stood at 5.8 percent, nearly double the national rate of 3.7 percent. State-by-state data also showed a similar disparity, with Black people experiencing twice the unemployment rate of their White counterparts. 1 in 55: In recent years, Black men had the highest imprisonment rates in state and federal institutions across race/ethnicity and gender; about 1 in 55 Black men in the United States were incarcerated. When the widespread effects of incarceration are included, the relative position of Black men’s labor force participation falls to where it was in 1950. 19.5 Percent:While Black males may have difficulty obtaining jobs, Black males who are ex-offenders have even more difficulty. Researchers find that 19.5 percent of employers report they will not hire ex-offenders, and another 42.1 percent said they probably would not hire ex-offenders.
