When President Joe Biden intensifies his attention next week to selling Republicans and Democrats on his coronavirus relief bill, he won’t be relying on some of the presidency’s most symbolic powers. Out, for now, are arm-twisting sessions in the Oval Office or rides into a lawmaker’s district aboard Air Force One. Instead, administration aides are planning remote television hits from the White House, out-of-the-blue phone calls to skeptical Republicans and maybe a stop somewhere within driving distance, according to officials. Hamstrung by the very pandemic he is working to contain, Biden and his advisers have sharply limited the ways in which he can…

The Nashville Soccer Club celebrated the progress of its stadium construction by holding a steel beam ceremony. Although the event was held virtually, athletes and fans alike watched as the first beam was installed for the new MLS stadium at The Fairgrounds Nashville. That beam weighed 2,800 pounds, and throughout the construction, over 13 million pounds of steel will be used. Although the process was a contentious one, plans are moving forward and the stadium is set to open in May of 2022.
Metro Nashville Public Schools Director Adrienne Battle will likely announce the district’s plan for reopening schools on Monday, the district announced Friday morning. As the spread of the coronavirus slows in Nashville, the district’s COVID-19 risk score dropped to a 6.7 out of 10 on Friday — the lowest the tracker has been since it was launched in November. If the score remains below 7 throughout the weekend, Director of Schools Adrienne Battle will announce a phase-in schedule by Monday afternoon to start bringing students back into the classroom for those parents who chose that option, according to a news release from the district.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has identified six officers whose actions they say saved lives during the Christmas Day bomb explosion in downtown Nashville. The six officers have been identified as: Officer Brenna Hosey, who has been with the department for 4 years; Officer James Luellen, who has been with the department for 3 years; Officer Michael Sipos, who has been with the department for 16-months; Officer Amanda Topping, who has been with the department for 21 months; Officer James Wells, who has been with the department for 21-months; and Sergeant Timothy Miller, who has been with the department for…
President Trump has signed the government funding and coronavirus relief package, the White House said, averting a government shutdown and delivering economic aid as the pandemic worsens. He drove the country through chaos from behind the wheel of his golf cart. Over the Christmas weekend, he was the only man with the power to forestall a government shutdown, restore jobless benefits to millions of laid-off Americans and prevent further economic calamity in the days ahead. The delay — prompted by Trump’s late-in-the-game dissatisfaction with the size of direct payment checks to Americans, his irritation at Senate Republican leaders and a…
Even though the pandemic has killed more than 330,000 people in the United States, put millions out of work and shuttered businesses across the country, the market is now tipping into outright euphoria. While the stock market ended with a small loss this past week, the S&P 500, Dow Jones industrial average and Nasdaq are just shy of record highs. Many investors, even those leery of growing signs of overconfidence, say it’s reasonable to expect stocks to continue to climb.
Rep. Jim Cooper (TN-05) along with Tennessee’s two U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Marsha Blackburn, sent a letter to President Trump asking him to approve Governor Bill Lee’s disaster declaration for Tennessee. On Christmas morning a bomb detonated in downtown Nashville, causing personal injury and damage to several downtown structures. Cooper, Alexander, and Blackburn all signed the attached letter in support of the declaration. “Nashvillians are grateful for the quick action by Governor Lee to request an emergency declaration to the President,” Rep. Jim Cooper said. “If approved, funding will start flowing to our damaged city.”
Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake named Anthony Quinn Warner, 63, of Antioch, Tennessee, as a key person in the investigation into the explosion of a recreational vehicle in Nashville early Christmas morning. “That is a person of interest — still there could be several more,” Drake said. Warner has been described as a “computer geek,” that kept to himself and didn’t talk politics. Authorities believe Warner’s remains were found at the blast site, according to several law enforcement officials with direct knowledge of the investigation, who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity. The FBI is waiting for results…
Joe Biden’s campaign mainly promised restoration. There was, however, one way that Biden said he would break with the past: In February, he declared that he would nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. The pledge, half-buried in the chaos of this year, suggested that this old white man — the one who needed several tries to apologize to Anita Hill —would be the one to make history. And unlike the Cabinet positions currently subject to political jockeying, this one would be for life. But whether Biden will be able to actually do it will likely be decided by the…
