Tyrone Smith, an accomplished musician and retired educator, lives his life with humility, care for others, and kindness. He loves his family, brings joy to others through his music, and is known for his energetic presence and affectionate smile. Smith was born on February 11, 1943, in Evanston, IL, just outside of Chicago. Around the age of five, his family moved to Memphis, TN, where he was educated in the Memphis City School System. By the age of 13, Smith was already performing at proms and school talent shows. Although he always had a love for sports, his small stature prevented him from playing, but it never deterred his energetic spirit. Instead, he channeled his enthusiasm into music and even coached basketball.
Smith matriculated to Tennessee State University in the 1960s, where he earned a degree in Health and Physical Education. He later married his high school sweetheart, Helen Smith, 57 years ago, and together they were blessed with a daughter, Attorney Prudence Smith Russell. After years of performing with various musicians and witnessing other bands, Smith decided he needed to create something different and energetic. This led to the establishment of the “Tyrone Smith Revue.” Inspired by the popular movie Superman at the time, Smith adopted the persona of “Super T,” performing in a superhero outfit that has since become a signature element of his act.
Tyrone Smith is known for his energetic performances, designed to motivate audiences to dance. Throughout his career, Smith had the privilege of sharing the stage with notable names in music. His friendships with Maurice White from Earth, Wind & Fire, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, DeFord Bailey, and many others enriched his musical journey. One of the highlights of his career was performing at the White House, where Jenna Bush Hagar first experienced the “Tyrone Smith Revue” at a fraternity party and had a dynamic time. Smith later received a call from the White House to perform at the Bush family Christmas party, followed by an invitation to perform at George W. Bush’s Inauguration Ball. The band was also invited to perform at Jenna Bush Hagar’s wedding reception.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Smith dedicated 45 years to teaching Health and Physical Education in the Metro Nashville Public Schools. He was a phenomenal influence on students, a motivator who made sure they knew how much he cared. A member of First Baptist Church Capitol Hill and a man of faith, Smith’s joyful spirit and unwavering dedication to his community have earned him numerous awards and recognitions. His legacy will last forever, as he continues to let his light shine through the life he lives and the service he gives.
When asked what Tyrone Smith means to her, Helen Smith said, “Tyrone and I have built a wonderful life together in Nashville, TN. He means so much to so many—‘Super T’ in the entertainment world, ‘Daddy’ to our daughter, ‘Coach Smith’ to countless basketball players, and ‘Mr. Smith’ to his students—but to me, he is simply ‘Smith’ or ‘Tyrone,’ the love of my life. I look forward to many more years together, sharing the love and memories we’ve created over the past 57 years.”
Attorney Prudence Smith Russell shared, “Growing up with my father, Tyrone ‘Super T’ Smith, was an adventure full of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. He has the most caring heart, always spreading kindness to everyone he meets. His first loves were music, entertainment, and of course, my mother, Helen Smith. My father was the first man I ever loved, and because of the great man and provider he is, I have never accepted anything less in any man I have met in life. I love him with all my heart.”
Dawana Boone, a physical education teacher, said, “I am a physical education teacher due to Tyrone Smith’s excellent example! At every school I have taught, he has come with no hesitation, along with his band, to perform and bring life to the students. His support and expertise have made a significant impact on my life and career.”
