As the newly elected representative for District 1 on the Metro Nashville Public School
Board, I am honored to serve a community that is rich in history, culture, and
resilience. Our district, home to five high schools—Whites Creek High School, East
Magnet High School, Maplewood High School, Kipp Nashville Collegiate High School,
and Republic High School—has long been a place where challenges are met with
determination and where our students’ potential is limitless, despite the obstacles
they may face.
District 1 has the highest percentage of economically disadvantaged students in
Metro Nashville Public Schools. This reality underscores the importance of equipping
our young people with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed, not just
academically, but as engaged citizens who understand their power to shape the
future.
One of the most critical ways we can empower our students is by encouraging and
facilitating their participation in the democratic process. Voting is a fundamental
right and a powerful tool for change. Yet, far too often, young people, especially those
from underserved communities, are left out of the conversation when it comes to
civic engagement.
This election season, we have a unique opportunity to change that narrative. In
partnership with Organize Tennessee – the state’s leading election protection
nonprofit – I am launching a voter registration and voter education initiative across
the high schools in District 1. Our goal is to ensure that every eligible student is
registered to vote, understands their voting rights, and is informed about the issues
that will impact their lives and their communities.
This initiative is about more than just registering students to vote—it’s about
educating them on the importance of civic participation and empowering them to
be active participants in our democracy. It’s about giving them the tools to advocate
for themselves and their communities, to hold their leaders accountable, and to
make their voices heard.
As we embark on this initiative, I am reminded of the words of civil rights leader and
my fellow Fiskite, John Lewis, who once said, “The vote is precious. It is almost sacred.
It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democracy.” Our students
deserve to know the power of their vote and the impact it can have on their futures.
I believe in the potential of every student in District 1, and I am committed to working
alongside our educators, families, and community partners to provide them with the
opportunities they need to succeed.
As someone who has been an MNPS parent, supporter, and employee for over 20
years, I’ve seen firsthand the power of student and family voices. This initiative is just
the beginning. I am committed to fulfilling my campaign promise to find fresh
solutions to the unique challenges we have in the District. This is the first of many
impact initiatives I plan to execute. Together, we can ensure that our students are
not only prepared for the future but are also active participants in shaping it.
