Nashville, Tenn. (TN Tribune)-Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, celebrated as one of the world’s leading dance companies, is set to perform at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville from April 26-28, 2024. The performances will take place at 505 Deaderick St, Nashville, TN, as part of a 21-city United States tour that commenced on January 25 in Atlanta. Following a successful launch of their 65th Anniversary season in New York City, the tour will also visit major cities including Washington, D.C., Miami, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles, concluding with a Mother’s Day performance in Newark on May 12.
The tour will feature two season premieres, CENTURY by Amy Hall Garner and Me, Myself and You by former Ailey dancer Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish. CENTURY draws inspiration from the life-affirming spirit of Garner’s grandfather on his 100th birthday, with a vibrant soundtrack featuring Ray Charles, Count Basie, and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Me, Myself and You, set to Damien Sneed and Brandie Sutton’s rendition of “In A Sentimental Mood,” explores themes of love and decision-making through a dreamlike dance.
New productions this season include Ronald K. Brown’s Dancing Spirit, a tribute to Ailey women set to music by Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis, and War, and Alonzo King’s Following the Subtle Current Upstream, an audacious exploration of life’s challenges. The season also features Jamar Roberts’s Ode, a reflective piece on gun violence set to Don Pullen’s Suite (Sweet) Malcolm (Part 1 Memories and Gunshots), and Hans van Manen’s Solo, a seven-minute tour-de-force.
The company will also perform a selection of Ailey Classics, including excerpts from Memoria, Night Creature, Pas de Duke, and more. Audiences across the tour can look forward to the timeless Alvin Ailey masterpiece Revelations, which has moved viewers worldwide with its profound narrative of hope, determination, and transcendence, rooted in Ailey’s childhood experiences in the South.
