NASHVILLE, TN — Dream 7 Theatre Productions stands as a beacon of artistic expression and community empowerment in the Greater Nashville area. Founded with a vision to provide a nurturing space for African-American performers to explore their talents, Dream 7 has been shaping the theatrical landscape for over two decades.
Established in 2000 by the visionary Michael L. Walker, Dream 7 emerged from the ashes of the Mother Ship company, Black Taffeta and Burlap. Walker’s mission was clear: to amplify African-American voices and experiences through the transformative power of theater. Thus, “theater with an edge” became the hallmark of Dream 7’s productions, resonating with audiences across socio-economic divides.
Central to Dream 7’s leadership are Vida Finley, Christan Riley, and Aaron Finley. Vida Finley, the executive director, brings four decades of theatrical expertise, including Broadway performances, to her role. Since assuming leadership in 2020, she has spearheaded initiatives to enhance the organization’s visibility and sustainability, attracting national recognition and sponsorships.
Christan Riley, the managing director, epitomizes Dream 7’s ethos of mentorship and skill development. Rising from an actor to a multifaceted theater professional, Riley embodies the spirit of continuous learning and artistic exploration.
Aaron Finley, vice president of the board of directors, embodies the collaborative spirit of Dream 7. From his humble beginnings as a lighting and sound technician, Finley has grown alongside the organization, contributing to its artistic and operational endeavors.
Looking ahead, Dream 7 envisions a future where it transcends geographical boundaries to become a premier theater company, showcasing its productions nationally and internationally. With plans for an integrated facility and innovative community programs, Dream 7 aims to leave a lasting legacy for future generations of artists and performers.
Currently, Dream 7 is collaborating with Gubasavi Productions on an immersive play titled “WEUSI,” celebrating African heritage and resilience. Through multimedia storytelling and community engagement, the production promises to uplift voices often marginalized in mainstream narratives.
Despite its successes, Dream 7 faces challenges typical of nonprofit organizations, including fundraising and capacity-building. However, through strategic partnerships, fundraising efforts, and dedicated training, Dream 7 continues to overcome obstacles and thrive in its mission.
As Dream 7 embarks on its journey toward excellence and inclusivity, it remains committed to its founding principles of empowerment, creativity, and community engagement. With each performance, Dream 7 amplifies voices, challenges perceptions, and inspires audiences to dream boldly.
