NASHVILLE, TN — The world of books and reading have always been an important part of Levar Burton’s life. No matter what acting assignments he’s had, he has maintained a connection to events and presentations connected with books and reading.
His newest position is a direct reflection of that interest. It was announced last week that Burton would be the new host of the 74th annual National Book awards.
He is replacing Drew Barrymore. Burton has hosted “Reading Rainbow” for over two decades, and also has a podcast “Levar Burton Reads,” where he narrates short fiction.
Burton has previously hosted the ceremony in 2019. He also has recently appeared as the American Library Association’s honorary chair during Banned Books Week.
“I’m a big believer in the power of the written word and am proud to stand alongside the National Book Foundation to celebrate exceptional storytelling and the Foundation’s mission to make books accessible to everyone, everywhere, “ Burton said in a statement last Friday.
“It’s an honor to return as host of the biggest night for books, especially in a moment when the freedom to read is at risk and literature both needs and deserves our recognition and support.”
The National Book Awards will be held November 15 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
