NASHVILLE, TN — Even those who think they totally know his history and importance may discover some new facts this week about the great Little Richard.
The remarkable pianist, bandleader and vocalist is the subject of an exceptional new documentary “Little Richard: The King and Queen of Rock and Roll.” It is an American Masters production in conjunction with Minnow Films and the BBC, and directed by James House.
The film shows Little Richard as a trailblazer in multiple areas. He was a pioneer for Black musicians and an innovative performer who also broke ground for LGBTQ artists. The production covers his career from the early days to his breakthrough during the 50s and also his role as a mentor to the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix snd the Isley Brothers.
It also covers his later years and includes his time spent in Nashville.
It includes his time in sanctified churches, the struggles with his father over his sexuality, and the formative years performing in underground clubs.
A long list of top musicians are interviewed, among them Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Nile Rodgers and Big Freedia as well as Bobby Rush and Pat Boone.
It will also include never before released audio recordings of Little Richard just made available from his biographer, Charles White.
