NASHVILLE, TN — Chicago Saxophonist Andre’ Ward has excelled in two different areas of jazz. He’s enjoyed hit albums working in the smooth jazz genre, and has also worked alongside such hit makers and stars as Najee, Kenny G and Alex Bugnon.
Ward is also a huge fan of traditional and mainstream jazz. He cues Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Parker among his favorites and in addition, has a love for gospel and soul,
I enjoy all forms of music Ward told the Tribune during a recent interview. The key for me is determining what instrument works best with the mood I want to convey and which can best bring the mood and flavor of the song to life for the listener.
Ward really demonstrates his abilities on the album, Caution, that was released a few weeks ago. The album includes examples of everything from rap influenced grooves to mellow tunes, and is yet another example of Ward being able to effectively operate in multiple idioms.
I truly believe that there is good music available in many idioms, Ward concluded. I listen to traditional jazz all the time and really love it. But there are times I want to hear other things or am in the mood to try other styles. People unfairly peg you as one thing or another. I want to show, and have shown, throughout my career I am comfortable playing in all styles.
Ward also is able to play the trumpet and EWI, Andre’ Ward has proven there are no restrictions or limits on what he can play or do musically.
