NASHVILLE, TN — It’s been a busy awards season for Spike Lee, and he’s set to get another one shortly. It was announced this week that Lee and long-time collaborator trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard would receive the Spirit of Collaboration Award from the Society of Composers & Lyricists. They will receive it at the second annual awards ceremonies later this year.
Lee and Blanchard have worked together on 15 films and three television projects.Their many joint ventures have included “Jungle Fever,” “Malcolm X,” “25th Hour,” “Inside Man” and the Peabody award winning documentary “When The Levees Broke.” Lee finally won an Oscar last year for “BlacKkKlansman,” getting the award for best adapted screenplay. Blanchard has been nominated by the Society for outstanding score for “Da Five Bloods.” Oscar-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross lead the field with three nominations for ‘Mank’ and ‘Soul,’ along with co-composer Jon Batiste.
The SCL Awards for top honors in scores and songs for visual media will be held virtually on March 2, 2021. Last year’s SCL’s outstanding original score winner Hildur Guðnadóttir for “Joker” went on to win the Oscar for best score. Five awards will be handed out for music in film, TV, streaming and video games.
