NASHVILLE, TN — Demolition of Fire Station #2 located at 500 2nd Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37201 will begin in the coming weeks.

The beginning of demolition means new construction of Nashville Fire Station 2 is imminent.

“The process of replacing Station 2 has been an unwavering journey to obtain the funding and approval from Mayor Cooper’s administration and the Metro Council,” Director Chief William Swann said. “We all thank Mayor Cooper and the Metro Council for their leadership and commitment to our department.”

The Nashville Fire Department closed Fire Station #2 in December of 2019 due to building and mechanical issues at the location. The NFD Administration decided to relocate the personnel and apparatus from the fire station to protect personnel safety.

Fire Station #2 was built in 1974 and was one of the city’s oldest fire stations still in use.

Personnel assigned to Engine 2 and Medic 2 relocated to Fire Station #9 located at 601 Second Avenue South.

Personnel assigned to Rescue 2 relocated to Fire Station #5 located at 1101 8th Avenue South.

Personnel assigned to Tower 2 relocated to Station #11 located at 1745 Dr. D.B. Todd Jr. Boulevard.

The temporary locations allowed the personnel from Station #2 to continue to serve the downtown core territory.

Metro General Services has scheduled the demolition of the Hill Detention Center and Fire Station 2, which will take place over the next few months.

People in the area will notice a lot of activity in the coming weeks, beginning with the removal of the remaining building.

During the early stages of the demolition process, loose debris will be collected and separated for disposal or recycling.

General Services will install a perimeter fence around the property and provide lockable gates for security. The fence will provide protection for pedestrian and vehicular traffic flows, and for adjacent properties and parking lots.

Plans are to operate a crushing machine to re-purpose the concrete for fill material on the project site. This method will also allow for removal and recycling of the embedded steel reinforcing products.

NFD is in the planning phase with Metro General Services to create the design and layout of the new Fire Station #2.

Fire Station 2 is slated to be located in the vicinity of the existing site and newly acquired Hill Detention Center property.

NFD and General Services plan to construct a state-of-the-art, LEED certified, facility with pull through bay access for NFD Apparatus.

More information related to site activities and the targeted completion of the new Fire Station #2 will be provided as it becomes available.
